One of my favorites. A generous use of the public domain audio documenting the Mission Control broadcasts guiding Apollo 11. A great song by Public Service Broadcasting.

The Redwood Cathedral and the Universe
“When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.” — John Muir
I have long misquoted this (I’m pretty sure I first read it in Steven Minkin’s otherwise fantastic novel, …A No Doubt Mad Idea), but according to the Sierra Club I’m not the only one. So, now I have the authentic quote to go by.
I’ve used it for years to describe how my mind works, and why I digress as much as I do. The digressions aren’t intentional, it’s just that picking at things leads me to those hitches.
And while I’m on the topic, listen to this:
“Not Perfect”
A song by Tim Minchin. A song about scale.
Thing is, when he sings,
This is my brain
And I live in it.
It’s made of love,
And bad song lyrics…
It’s hard for me not to think of this MRI image of, yes, my brain from October, 2011:

It’s not perfect (lord knows)… but it’s mine.
Maria, by Che Apalache
The purpose of this post is two-fold: To bring some attention to a nice fusion tune.
Also, to test the YouTube block in WordPress’ fancy visual editor. Thus:
(After some experimentation, not all songs will embed in WordPress. Even when they work on Facebook. Is great frustration and puzzlement.)
Sing a song
There’s this text printers use when they want a graphic mock-up of a page, but don’t want to be distracted by the meaning of the words. It’s called Lorem ipsum. It’s a long stretch of Latin, which very few people understand anymore.
I realized tonight an appeal when listening to songs in a language you don’t understand — “world music” — is much the same. The song itself can wash over you. The melody, the qualities of the instruments and human voices. You don’t know what the song’s about, but that’s the point. You’re there to appreciate the song, with the chrome of meaning stripped off.
Quote test
I’m going to use the opening of “The Night We Met,” by Lord Huron. This is mostly to see if I can play with the typeface for the Quote attribute.
I am not the only traveler…
Who has not repaid his debt.
And now back to our regularly scheduled programming.
